Let's Forget About The Government For A Minute, How Do You Treat Your Gateman?

Sometime ago, I lived in a compound that employed a Nigerien as gate man/security guard. His name was Abdul. He was friendly, spoke clean aboki English and would run errands only if you reward him in cash.

After living in that compound for a few weeks, I discovered that the room Abdul slept in was unpalatable. He had a terrible mattress, rain and Sun beat him there. The landlord refused to fix the room. His duties were to wash every tenant's car, run errands and to open/close the gate.

I would watch in despair every time he brings out his mattress for the sun do dry after a heavy downpour and "pack" water from his "apartment". Worse, some of my co-tenants refused to pay their dues to him. The monthly contributions we paid were his salary.

Abdul came to me after a few months of being owed.

Abdul: Welcome madam, abeg I wan tell you something.

Me: Wetin happen?

Abdul: I wan tell you wetin I never tell anybody for this compound. These people no dey pay me my money complete. After this night, I dey comot. Abdul continued; If not for you, hunger for don kill me.

That night, I had come back late from work and wanted Abdul to give his fellow aboki my clothes to mend. After hearing his news, I couldn't give them to him. I was disheartened.

He saw the bag I was holding. "wetin dey the bag?" and I explained.  "Haba madam, na my work be this! Abdul fixed my clothes perfectly and returned them the next day.

Abdul left his employment, just as other guards before and after him. I collected his information and promised to call anytime I need his services.

This made me think that why people get to power and lose their senses. It is easy to forget your past, especially bad experiences I know, but shouldn't kindness be a "thing"?  It is easy to treat your neighbour shabbily if you forget your humble beginnings.

If you won't pay your gate man his wage because he did not greet you properly, how will you treat your constituents?

The elections are only a few months away. Pay attention to who you want to vote for. Granted, Nigerians are corrupt. Our politicians play with our present, past and future. They gamble and enrich themselves with our resources. They are all cut from the same cloth but  wouldn't God be kind to give us someone to vote for who has a little bit sympathy for people around him?

Ask questions. Do you pay the salaries of your staff? What's the guarantee that when we vote for you, you won't give us excuses? How do you dispose your waste? Inside gutter? Who are your friends?

Currently, we have governors who party in clubs and build statues along dirty government roads. Why wouldn't we be buried in debt? Why should other countries take us seriously?

It begins with us.

My First Day In Ikoyi Prison

Hello guys, I was led to join the Prison Ministry in my church many moons ago. I had a desire to help people in many ways by providing resources,  my time, etc. Serving there has been a blessing.  Ikoyi Prison Entrance My first experience at Ikoyi Prison, Falomo was enriching. I left home early to avoid the usual Third Mainland Bridge traffic so that I could make it to the Prison and join my team mates on time so I was feeling drowsy. I was surprised when my team mate said I should not worry that the sleep would disappear as soon as we step in. She was right. I forgot the sleep and was emotional all through our stay/service. Before we entered the facility, we were thoroughly searched. Azzin!! Head to toe something. No phones allowed. No sharp objects either. Then I saw the men.  There were so many men. So many hungry and hopeful gazes at us. We were led to the Church, yes, there are two churches and a mosque in that facility. I was impressed an...

Customer Service Talk with Jane

The not so huge secret is out! I have been sharing some business tips on this blog but I am more passionate about Customer Service and I am very vocal about this not because of my years of experience working as a Customer Service Executive but because Nigerian vendors like to test our patience and I have experienced too much of it to ignore. I have also been hosting talks on a Whatsapp group for a while now where I share some tips and my Customer Service experience, answer questions business owners have and how to resolve customer complaints satisfactorily. I am excited to share publicly that I will be hosting another Customer Service Talk on March 6, 2022 by 8pm. Attendance is free and virtual(Google Meet) but you have to register. Don't Keep Your Customers Waiting

Feedbacks like the above aren't good for business growth as they discourage other "intending" Customers. You should not keep Customers waiting whether you own a kiosk or a conglomerate.  We have terrible and incompetent policymakers in Nigeria whose policies crumble businesses, but business owners should play their part and ensure they keep their businesses afloat by keeping loyal Customers satisfied.  When you satisfy your clients, they would not leave. They will bring more clients to you saving you the cost budgeted for Advertisement and Promotion. One of the parts you need to play well is to hire willing and loyal staff. I didn't believe tales of few good or employable people until I started helping employers to hire people. The labour market is not encouraging, yes, but you should keep searching. You can use job sites well, give them your requirements and pay the applicable fee needed to get what you want. You can also headhunt after proper due diligence. If you d...
