My Experience #CustodianMentorsConference 2019 #CustodianMentors

With Oby Ezekwesili; The former Minister of Education. No, I am not pregnant

My heart is full of gratitude as I write this blog. I have seen great people but never have I met the ones who I have looked up to from afar.

Recently, I had tweeted about Subomi Plumtre and how much I love her. She has the ability to put down what I think but can't write(believe me, this takes a lot of grace). I have gone as far as reading most of the posts on her website. The only thing I am yet to do is subscribe to her investment class, which I hope to do soon.

I didn't know that I would meet her in person much less be in the same room with her and other great people I have looked up to for long time. I do not want to bore you with too much details but I have to share some of the lessons we learnt from the conference.

My mentors were influenced by their parents. Their fathers played huge roles in their lives. I have been a very vocal advocate of raising children well. I believe that what children "see at home", they exhibit to the world. There are behaviours(good/bad) that we learn from childhood that influence us and we find difficult to shake off. These mentors had nothing but praise for their parents who taught them values, principles, diligence, integrity, purpose, assignment, etc, which has led them to success.

Mr. Wole Oshin; GMD of Custodian Investments PLC and the chief host of the event kicked off the conference with a short biography of his life. He shared how his desire to have his own Insurance company drove him to interning for a company for free. The company later employed and paid him well but he got there by his passion and sense of purpose. He also said that he had always wanted to change the way Insurance was done back in their days. He admonished us to have a destination and make intentional moves. He and his team were willing to learn and learnt their trade in a company for 3 years.

During the two hours that she counselled and mentored us, I felt Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili(Former Minster of Mining and Education, Former VP World Bank and Economic Adviser) try to drill her values into us. She tried to make us understand with her life as an example, how these gems(integrity, purpose, etc) would change our lives if only we followed them. She also reminded us that we are in the dispensation of LQ an acronym for Love Quotient (I need to read more about this. The world is waiting for us to use our "humanness" to bring the world together. She told us we have the world without travelling as thy had to and should be make our life meaningful.

Mr. Leke Alder gave us six points with six examples of his life. He advised us to put our best in everything we do in life and have integrity because it is a credit facility. he reminded us of the famous phrase: Nobody owes you anything. There should be no excuses. He told us to always use our imagination. Don't let religion kill your brain cells or your creativity, he said. Your creativity is what God gave you in abundance, use it. He said we should believe in ourselves.

He also said we should not be afraid to take on giants. We should start somewhere. Go beyond making money. Nobody is too young to contribute to the society

My First Day In Ikoyi Prison

Hello guys, I was led to join the Prison Ministry in my church many moons ago. I had a desire to help people in many ways by providing resources,  my time, etc. Serving there has been a blessing.  Ikoyi Prison Entrance My first experience at Ikoyi Prison, Falomo was enriching. I left home early to avoid the usual Third Mainland Bridge traffic so that I could make it to the Prison and join my team mates on time so I was feeling drowsy. I was surprised when my team mate said I should not worry that the sleep would disappear as soon as we step in. She was right. I forgot the sleep and was emotional all through our stay/service. Before we entered the facility, we were thoroughly searched. Azzin!! Head to toe something. No phones allowed. No sharp objects either. Then I saw the men.  There were so many men. So many hungry and hopeful gazes at us. We were led to the Church, yes, there are two churches and a mosque in that facility. I was impressed an...

Customer Service Talk with Jane

The not so huge secret is out! I have been sharing some business tips on this blog but I am more passionate about Customer Service and I am very vocal about this not because of my years of experience working as a Customer Service Executive but because Nigerian vendors like to test our patience and I have experienced too much of it to ignore. I have also been hosting talks on a Whatsapp group for a while now where I share some tips and my Customer Service experience, answer questions business owners have and how to resolve customer complaints satisfactorily. I am excited to share publicly that I will be hosting another Customer Service Talk on March 6, 2022 by 8pm. Attendance is free and virtual(Google Meet) but you have to register. See link below: https://forms.gle/Jp9cTX6fTLNUzpnf6 See you there!

Don't Keep Your Customers Waiting

Feedbacks like the above aren't good for business growth as they discourage other "intending" Customers. You should not keep Customers waiting whether you own a kiosk or a conglomerate.  We have terrible and incompetent policymakers in Nigeria whose policies crumble businesses, but business owners should play their part and ensure they keep their businesses afloat by keeping loyal Customers satisfied.  When you satisfy your clients, they would not leave. They will bring more clients to you saving you the cost budgeted for Advertisement and Promotion. One of the parts you need to play well is to hire willing and loyal staff. I didn't believe tales of few good or employable people until I started helping employers to hire people. The labour market is not encouraging, yes, but you should keep searching. You can use job sites well, give them your requirements and pay the applicable fee needed to get what you want. You can also headhunt after proper due diligence. If you d...
