Marry Me: Let's Do Business Together - Contd

I shook my head and crossed his name off my “frequent guests” list.

I wavered between sitting on my chair and the bed; where he sat. I opted for the chair and waited for what he had to say.

“I am sorry I have nothing in my kitchen to offer you”. It had been an awesome week.

“No need sef” He replied. “What we need to discuss is more important.”

“Okay”.

He jumped off and pulled off his coat, came around me and hung the jacket on the back of my chair then sat back on the bed.

I thought the most energetic person in Lagos, Nigeria was me?

“I wanted to buy you plenty of sausages before leaving church” He began.

“Really?” I didn’t know where the conversation was going but I had to respond.

“Yes, really”.  “Have you forgotten during Shiloh? You sent someone to buy one thousand naira worth of sausages to eat” He asked.

I got flashbacks.

I remember he asked me to send him airtime. We had talked and he had a lady hung on his arm who followed him around like a fly.

I also remembered she wore a sparkling ring on her finger.

“Can I ask a question”? I am famous for my impatience.

“ Go ahead”.

“Are you married or engaged?” If he answers affirmatively, why did he travel long distance to see me?

What couldn’t wait till Sunday?

“Ah No! I am not married” He was emphatic.

“I see” I was disappointed but relieved that I didn’t invite someone’s significant other to my abode.

“Are you engaged? I ask, because of that lady with you last time I saw you. You guys looked close and went out together.”

“I am very single o. I met that lady in church”

Really? Hmmm. I thought they looked married or in counselling for marriage, at least.

“I came to discuss business with you. Let’s do business together”.

“Business? What kind of business?”. I thought hard and started blaming my blabbermouth. I wondered what I had said to attract his interest.

“The God kind of business” He responded.

“Many businesses are God-kind”; I scoffed.

“Do you remember our conversation” He asked.

My scrambled thoughts hadn’t finished their work. “Please remind me.”

“You shared that you are a Business Consultant and I decided that we can really do a lot together”.

“Oh”

“Yes,” He mentioned some big-wigs; members in our church that I could consult for and how well he knows them and their Real Estate Businesses.

"I can arrange meetings with them for you next week."

"Next week?"

"Yes. But that is by-the-way”

My interest was piqued but he sounded like there was more on the way, so I snapped my head out of the clouds. “I am listening”. I was designing my presentation, picking out outfits for the meetings.

“You are the kind of person I want around me”.

“How?”, I wanted to know how much his commission for linking me to big corporations would be.

“Well, I have decided that I need you in my life. I want to marry you this year”.

I was not expecting that.

“WHAT!!”. I can scream the house down if I want to. He came to say nonsense.

“Yes. I really like you and do not think we should waste time before we settle down”.

“How do you propose marriage to someone you don’t know?” I need to know how his mind works.

“I met you once and you were impressive. That was enough for me to make up my mind.”

“I see”, of course, I didn’t see anything. I was thinking of a way to tell him to leave my house.

"Let me explain". He must have seen something in my eyes. "I see your passion for life and the things of God and desire to have someone like you"

"Have someone like me?", I parroted.

"Yes". He paused.

"I am waiting for your reasons", I used to dislike K-drama and Bollywood for many reasons like this drama playing out in my apartment. I never thought that I'd be living in one.

"I should start by introducing myself", Better late than never. I calmed down, reminded by that book by Derek Prince.

"I am from Kwara State, Nigeria, I come from a family of..."

"What do you do for a living", I was not interested in his family tree. Marriage is serious business for me. I did not wait this long to settle.

"Well", He hesitated. "I am a videographer and I currently work with DSTV"

"Hmmm. And?"

"I am also a member of the church's media crew".

"Okay"

"I am waiting for an appointment in Benue"

"What appointment?"

"A lecturing position"

"Do you plan to leave your current role with DSTV?"

"No"

"How do you plan to juggle both jobs?"

"Well, I made plans with a friend to fly me with helicopter". My brows rose.

"Helicopter?"

"Yes"

"Not plane rides, helicopter?". This guy thinks I am gullible and desperate.

"Okay".

"So, is your answer Yes?"

"Huh?" I am flabbergasted.

"I want to start planning immediately",

"What are you planning?"

"Our marriage. I have prayed and God said you are the one". I am very sure he didn't pray because the God I know would have told him not to try me.

"I see. Well, I need to pray too". I would not have imagined this kind of proposal, even in my wildest dreams.

"How soon can I get your YES".

"As soon as I get a response from God". I have grown o. I don't know which encounter taught me to hide my exasperation.

"it is getting late. You should start going". I was on my feet.

"Time passed so quickly! Our married life will be fun" I rolled my inner eyes.

"How far are you going?

"Abulegba. I don't think I can go there today."

"Why?"

"My brother's friend lives in Lekki on Admiralty way" hmmm.

"Does he know you are around?"

"No"

"But he gave me keys to his BQ to stay anytime"

Hmmm. I knew enough Lekki agents to know that few people have free apartments to give but I let the lie fly.

He stood up. "thank you for welcoming me".  You won't be coming again, I silently responded.

"Can I get small change from you?" He asked

I knew the other shoe would drop. "What change?".

His coat already told me he had no transport fare.

My First Day In Ikoyi Prison

Hello guys, I was led to join the Prison Ministry in my church many moons ago. I had a desire to help people in many ways by providing resources,  my time, etc. Serving there has been a blessing.  Ikoyi Prison Entrance My first experience at Ikoyi Prison, Falomo was enriching. I left home early to avoid the usual Third Mainland Bridge traffic so that I could make it to the Prison and join my team mates on time so I was feeling drowsy. I was surprised when my team mate said I should not worry that the sleep would disappear as soon as we step in. She was right. I forgot the sleep and was emotional all through our stay/service. Before we entered the facility, we were thoroughly searched. Azzin!! Head to toe something. No phones allowed. No sharp objects either. Then I saw the men.  There were so many men. So many hungry and hopeful gazes at us. We were led to the Church, yes, there are two churches and a mosque in that facility. I was impressed an...

Customer Service Talk with Jane

The not so huge secret is out! I have been sharing some business tips on this blog but I am more passionate about Customer Service and I am very vocal about this not because of my years of experience working as a Customer Service Executive but because Nigerian vendors like to test our patience and I have experienced too much of it to ignore. I have also been hosting talks on a Whatsapp group for a while now where I share some tips and my Customer Service experience, answer questions business owners have and how to resolve customer complaints satisfactorily. I am excited to share publicly that I will be hosting another Customer Service Talk on March 6, 2022 by 8pm. Attendance is free and virtual(Google Meet) but you have to register. See link below: https://forms.gle/Jp9cTX6fTLNUzpnf6 See you there!

Don't Keep Your Customers Waiting

Feedbacks like the above aren't good for business growth as they discourage other "intending" Customers. You should not keep Customers waiting whether you own a kiosk or a conglomerate.  We have terrible and incompetent policymakers in Nigeria whose policies crumble businesses, but business owners should play their part and ensure they keep their businesses afloat by keeping loyal Customers satisfied.  When you satisfy your clients, they would not leave. They will bring more clients to you saving you the cost budgeted for Advertisement and Promotion. One of the parts you need to play well is to hire willing and loyal staff. I didn't believe tales of few good or employable people until I started helping employers to hire people. The labour market is not encouraging, yes, but you should keep searching. You can use job sites well, give them your requirements and pay the applicable fee needed to get what you want. You can also headhunt after proper due diligence. If you d...
